My first blog post that wasn't typed out on my phone into an Instagram post first! So far, I would type something up on Instagram while making my usual posts there, but if I'm going to make a conscious switch from social media to my website, then I need to start prioritizing my website. There's a certain feeling of 'coolness' when I say to someone that I have a website, or I refer someone to my website. It must've been what it felt like in the late 90's before social media. "Yeah, I got a website and everything!" Yeah I know everyone and their mom can have a website through Wix or Squarespace or whatever other services pay YouTubers to advertise, but since I've actually been learning HTML, CSS, and Javascript to build this site, it just feels a lot different. I've used WYSIWYG (pronounced wizzy-wig, an abbreviation for "What You See Is What You Get") website makers long ago in the past, but they were never published sites and strictly for religious indoctrination church stuff. But it still had the same weird layout and gaudy presentation. How I miss those days of website design.
Going forward, my website here will take precedence over social media. I will post things here first, and social media will become the afterthought. I made a post on Facebook saying that I would be pulling away from the site and left a link to this site saying that if anyone wanted to still follow me and get updates, they could bookmark or save that link. Of course someone had to comment on it saying "But I love seeing your art!" I'm sorry, did you not read all three lines of text I typed out above? Especially the last one, all on its own, which was a link to my website. I took a screenshot of that post, complete with his comment, circled the URL in red with a few arrows pointing at it and replied to him with just the edited screenshot. I'm almost certain he will complain somehow about it, either because he doesn't want to use a bookmark or try to remember to visit my site. But oh well, if I'm not that important to you, so be it. Not really my problem at this point.
And even as I sit here, typing all this out, it already feels different; not just because I'm using all of my digits on a keyboard instead of two thumbs onto a touchscreen, but because I know in my mind I'm not typing this out knowing it will go first onto social media, so I'm not typing with a sort of projected judgement against myself for posting certain things or talking about certain subjects. It is strangely liberating and I encourage anyone who reads this to try it themselves.
I think I've made a quiet resolution to read more and write more this year, and spend less time on social media. Less screen time would be nice, but I think it's more about what's on the screen in front of me and what I'm doing with that screen in front of me that matters more. Hours of scrolling on YouTube or Instagram? Not for me. I'd rather spend hours learning to code, educating myself, enriching myself. Something that can't easily be done (if at all) on social media.
