I've pretty much resolved to stop going on Facebook from now on. It doesn't serve its intended purpose for me anymore. All the algorithm wants to feed me is political posts where the best and brightest netizens put their declining mental faculties on full display; posts from people I don't even know; and shallow hits of nostalgia in the form of vague status updates from over 10 years ago that I don't even care about.

But the habit is so strong that it was hard to even stop myself from checking on it. My best course of action it seemed was to add Facebook to my DNS blocker, normally used to stop advertising. Now if I navigate to the website it won't even load – though if I disconnect from my home WiFi network I'll be able to connect to Facebook again.

One of my last posts I made on Facebook was directing people here to my Instagram or to my website dsco-media.neocities.org which I implore people to save or bookmark (I'll also link it in my bio). Eventually I'd like to move away from Instagram as well, as lately I've been bombarded with ads for anything and everything – from lawn care to coffee, kids books, music, and math tutoring, – all made with AI images.

And what really sucks is that these algorithms are built on engagement, so even if I comment on every one calling out their use of AI, Instagram says "hey, that's good! Let's show it to more people!" Which is the opposite of what I truly want. So I'm beginning to slowly migrate away from social media as a whole.

If you really want to keep up with me, check out my website. I'll be updating it a lot more with thoughts, videos, art, etc.
